If conventional plastic tree growth cover are left in the forest after use - which is almost always the case - the plastic decomposes over the years. As a result, the microplastics pollute the forest. But who wants to leave a plastic-contaminated forest for posterity? This is where our Buckshülle comes in.
Tree and browsing protection: The innovative Buckshülle is ...
- effectively protects seedlings from damage by wildlife and weeds;
- bio-based and biodegradable because it is made from cotton and other renewable raw materials;
- produced in a carbon neutral manner;
- air and light permeable for optimal growth: protection against mold and fungus growth, overheating and dehydration; optimal photosynthesis;
- lightweight (130 g for 120 cm length) and quick and easy to install.
- can be kept for at least five years (even longer depending on weather conditions).
Rated and certified by TÜV Austria with 4 out of 4 stars.
Download certificateSustainable tree protection: what exactly is the Buckshülle made of?
The Buckshülle consists of a circular knitted fabric that we process into an air and light permeable tube. All materials used are bio-based and biodegradable:
- cotton: ideal, as it is available in large quantities.
- corn starch/polylactic acid: a bio-based plastic derived from renewable raw materials such as corn or sugar cane, which provides the necessary stiffness for the Buckshülle.
The knitted cotton fiber for the Buckshülle was developed by the DITF Denkendorf (German Institutes for Textile and Fiber Research) on our behalf. The cotton fiber tube created in the first step and the corn starch are “intimately spun” in a special process and knitted into a solid tube.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable plastic composed of lactic acid molecules. It can be produced from renewable carbohydrate sources such as corn starch or sugar cane through a pre-fermentation, main fermentation and polycondensation reaction. It is therefore not based on an environmentally harmful petroleum-based material. Important: The polylactic acid used for the shell is 99% pure - it contains no plasticizers or other additives.
During the biodegradation process, polylactic acid can break down into very small pieces. However, these continue to degrade without leaving any residue. Microplastics in the sense of non-degradable small plastic particles are not produced. In addition, polylactic acid is completely harmless to organisms that ingest these particles. Because it dissolves in the body without significant intermediate products, high-purity polylactic acid is also used in implant surgery.
Who is already using the Buckshülle?
Many eco-conscious customers and organizations are convinced by the Buckshülle and are happy to use it instead of traditional tree covers. These include...
- Tree nurseries,
- State forest administrations, e.g. Forst BW, Hessen Forst, Landesforsten RLP etc,
- Forest owner associations,
- Municipalities, cities and communities
- Dealers and
- Private forest owners.
And of course we at BUCK are pleased to be able to contribute to the protection of the forest from microplastics with a technical knitted fabric.
Get in touchThis is how easy it is to install the Buckshülle.
Since the Buckshülle is very light at about 130 grams and 120 centimeters long (slightly heavier than a bar of chocolate), it can be easily carried by hand to hard-to-reach places. Assembly takes about 20 seconds.
- Manually bend the supplied flat Buckshülle against the existing folds to create a tube shape.
- Then place the cover over the young plant, holding the branches tightly together.
- Then push the retaining tabs inward and insert the retaining rod through the tabs.
- Finally, hammer the stake into the ground to secure it. Finished.
Good to know: frequently asked questions about the Buckshülle.
Who is the Buckshülle for?
The Buckshülle is an interesting alternative for municipalities, cities, local authorities, forest owner associations, state forest administrations and also private forest owners who want to contribute to the reduction of microplastics in the forest. Retailers are also among our customers.
Why is cotton used as the material for the Buckshülle?
We use pure organic cotton to make the fiber because it is available in large quantities, unlike flax, for example, which could also be used.
Does the tree protection last long enough?
The Buckshülle lasts at least five years. This is enough time for the young tree to develop resistance to "attacks" by game, for example. Depending on the weather and location, of course.
Is the Buckshülle available in different versions?
Depending on your needs, we can produce the Buckshülle in different, individual lengths. At the moment, the Buckshülle is available in a length of 1.20 m and as a red deer version in a length of 1.80 m. The color is always beige/light brown.
Which tree species can be protected with the Buckshülle?
In addition to the tree growth cover for deciduous trees, we will also be producing a variant for conifers with a diameter of 250 to a maximum of 270 millimetres from 2025.
Isn't cotton too unstable to protect trees?
Cotton alone would be too unstable. However, the combination with cornstarch gives the Bückshülle the stability it needs by turning the original tube into a solid tube.
How long does it take to install the Bückshülle?
With a little practice, the cover itself only takes about 20 seconds to install.
What do I need to install the Buckshülle?
One person and one tool are required to hammer in the retaining bar. If desired, a staple gun can be used to secure the cover to the support bar to prevent it from sliding up. The holding rod is not included with the Buckshülle.
What happens to the tree growth cover when it is no longer needed?
Since the Buckshülle is bio-based and barely noticeable in the environment, it can simply be left in the forest after successful use.
Has the Buckshülle been certified by an accredited organization?
The Buckshülle was rated and certified with 4 out of 4 stars in the OK biobased test (TÜV Austria). You can download the certificate at the top of this website.
